Save money on magazines

How often do you find yourself waiting in a long checkout line at the grocery store, and can’t resist picking up a magazines “just to pass the time”. Sometimes it’s an article about hot new fashion trends, the latest celebrity gossip, or personal finance advice that catches our attention. We flip through the pages, looking for what caught our eye. We become engrossed in the article, only to find that the conveyor belt has mysteriously sped up to warp speed. Suddenly, it’s your turn at the register. But you’re not done reading the article! You can’t put the magazine down now! What to do, what to do….?

Often the answer is that we buy the magazine. Many of us fall into the trap of opening the magazine cover with the intent of reading just that one article that caught our attention. Instead, we end up walking out of the store with our wallets several dollars lighter, with the magazine in hand. If this has happened to you, raise your hand (but don’t drop that magazine… no littering, ladies and gents). Yes, that’s my hand in the air, too. Guilty as charged… but I’ve found a way to decrease those charges for magazine impulse purchases.

The obvious answer is not to buy the magazine. But what fun is that? A simple way to read your magazine and save money, too, is to buy a digital edition. If you use an Android or iOS phone or tablet, you can see a sizeable savings by reading digital editions of your favorite magazines and papers. For example, an issue of MoneySense magazine that caught my eye has a newsstand price of $6.95. The digital version only cost me $0.99! Now I can finish reading that article about how to retire rich…. with nearly a $7 savings to put towards that goal!

Buying discounted digital editions of your favorite magazine is easy. On iPhone and iPads, go to the Newsstand app. For those using Android devices, download the Google Newsstand app.20140805-154326-56606478.jpg
